to syria, robert ford, confirmed that the obama administration is considering deeper intervention to help the rebels in syria, something that to date, it's been loathe to do. no decision has been made at least not yet, we're told. what do you make of this? it would certainly be a dramatic policy shift. >> it would, wolf, but in some ways, it's too late. it's awfully, there are real consequences to the fact we waited and acted through allies. this has been a real crisis along the turkish border. we worked with our arab allies in saudi arabia and qatar but in the meantime, this vacuum that's been created while the assad regime anile ates its own people, the bloodshed that's taken place, has created this vacuum. the lack of western action, not just u.s. but also its allies, and allowed people like al qaeda to get in there and extremists and insert themselves. it's become a much more dangerous situation. we have seen the developments today with taking down of the internet, for example, and you really do have to worry about why the assad regime is doing that now, just as the rebels have shown

. is that accurate? how do you read this? >> this has been a disaster for the obama administration. this has been a failure. the congress has been at the president's throat about this. basically what could happen here, instead of closing it all at once, this report suggests that the 166 people left can be brought one at a time into the united states to be tried. some of these people have been there for almost ten years and charges haven't been brought against them. some will be charged by military tribe unl in guantanamo. some can be tried in american courts in america through some combination. that's pretty much how it looks like it will be. it will be thinned out if not closed. there are six prisons and federal prisons that can handle these gitmo detainees. it also says that the changes should be made at some of the sites. what are we talking about logistically. >> it doesn't strike me as all that lodgist iing -- a huge logistical challenge. i have been to guantanamo a couple of times. the prisons built there are actually built on the models, the actual physical plans of american maximum securi

.s., the obama administration, nato now obviously very concerned about the regime of president assad potentially using chemical weapons, poison gas against its own people. here's the question, what is the difference killing civilians in syria with bombs from jet fighters or attack helicopters as opposed to using say poison gas or chemical warfare? >> that's a good question. in one sense in moral terms, there is no difference and almost 40,000 people have died in syria already. but i think the use of chemical weapons and poison gas, i think the fatalities would be very much greater. and it does cross a line. these aren't judgments that you can make in any scientific way. but i think what your administration, the international community is signaling to president assad, if you cross that line, there will be a strong reaction. >> those are tough words coming from president obama, from secretary of state hillary clinton, from the nato secretary-general today in brussels. but is that enough to president bahar al assad from using chemical weapons or is there something else the international community s

every year under this administration. president obama has nearly doubled the debt. the spending is out of control. and it's -- we have this economy that continues to struggle -- >> the debt ceiling -- >> the debt ceiling is our opportunity to really look at these questions, but the republicans want to negotiate -- speaker boehner the day after the election, went to the podium and put tax revenue on the table. this is our moment, this is our -- tip o'neill and president reagan back in the early '80s, they came together. they negotiated to save social security as well as address the spending. and it was a $3 in spending cuts to every dollar in new revenue. and that's the type of approach we need today. >> they never used the issue of debt ceiling in those negotiations. that's relatively new. the president says, i will not play that game. he may have no choice, because the republicans have a decisive majority in the house of representatives. if they want to play that game, he's going to have to do it. >> whey believe the president is saying is, we could get to a big deal, a good big deal
